Blackpool is a mid-sized coastal resort located in the North West of England, with a population of approximately 140,000. It is not as well known as other English cities such as London or Cambridge, yet is a very popular tourist destination, particularly during the autumn months. In the beginning, the Illuminations was referred to as artificial sunshine. This festival is every evolving which makes each year's event a bit different from previous years. The latest festival has an emphasis on energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. The Illuminations festival has seen many events develop around it with many things to entertain everyone.

The Illuminations is from late August to early November, which is considered the busiest season for the town.
